The Saviour of the World
What or whom is to save our planet Earth from man's wickedness and mismanagement? Down the ages and of course in modern times too there have been men and women who have made an impression on the world, some to the good , many to the bad.
Men have also created worldwide institutions like the United Nations to prevent war, to provide food aid, education and refuge to the poorest peoples and to protect human rights. The International Monetary Fund gives financial aid and stability to developing counties but neither of these examples has solved the problems our world faces.
Many men and women think that, give our sophisticated and technologically advanced civilization, man himself can bring about a world that has lasting peace, a world of plenty and a world that is environmentally sustainable. Considering the evidence over the last decades from all around the globe, do you really believe these conditions can be brought about by man’s efforts alone?
Have you ever thought that there could be an alternative? If so, do you know where to find out about it? Looking closely at God's Word, the Holy Bible should give you some pleasant surprises and a lot of hope for the future. The Bible gives us reasons not to be too hopeful of the plans of mankind: "Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. When their spirit departs they return to the ground, on that very day their plans come to nothing" (Psalm 146v3 NIV).
The book of Psalms goes on to recommend that we put our trust in God, the maker of heaven and earth, who will rid the word of oppression and wickedness and provide for hungry and disadvantaged people. Read for yourself Psalm 146. This is only a glimpse of the wonderful worldwide kingdom that God intends will replace the rule of man on Earth.
Well, you might ask, how and when will God bring all this about? In God's plan the Lord Jesus Christ is destined to return literally to the earth from heaven to establish God's new world. Jesus is the one and only Saviour of the world. After the crucifixion of Jesus and after God had raised him to life again, angels reassured his early followers of his return to the earth “Men of Galilee", they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." (Acts of the Apostles chapter 1v11 NIV) Jesus Christ is the only one who has been made immortal so when he returns to the Earth he will have no fear of anything or anyone, he will be sole king, sole ruler, unable to be overthrown.
This Earth will not disintegrate because of nuclear war, the peoples will not be wiped out because of famine or disease, the planet will not be destroyed by man's greed and abuse of world resources because Jesus Christ will save the earth and reign in righteousness, with mercy but with justice and with authority over all things, having the overwhelming power of God at his disposal. The Bible describes his regime in Psalm 72, it's worth reading, because one day soon the whole earth will be full of God's glory.
Wonderfully, the Bible also gives us signs about when this great event will begin to happen. One of the strongest signs which the Bible foretells has been the regathering of the Jewish people to their homeland, the setting up of the State of Israel just over 60 years ago and Jerusalem being made its undivided capital city. The present troubles between Israel and its near neighbours are all foretold in the Bible, and their outcome, as a precursor to the second coming of Christ.
Even now there are more immediate signs happening: in the Gospel record of Luke we read words of Jesus himself who looked forward to our days, he said “On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity..........Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world.....When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke chapter 21vv 25-28 NIV) This is how many, many people across the world are feeling right now, vulnerable, insecure and in fear and seeing no future for themselves or their children.
When Jesus comes back to the earth he will call to be with him only those who have believed in his words and have been waiting for him. Not only will he be Saviour of the World but he can be your Saviour too .His call to all people has always been "Repent for the Kingdom of God is near". Christ died that all who believe on him should not perish but have everlasting life in his kingdom; if we ignore his call we shall not be part of the new world God will create. Jesus asks us to change our ways and our thinking (this is the meaning of the word repent). His sacrificial death can save us even though we are sinners and trust in man and not God.
If we choose to change and demonstrate this and our trust in God by being baptised, fully immersed in water, and re-order our lives for the future then we have the promise that even if we die before Jesus comes we will be raised to life in his kingdom on earth at his coming. This is surely something worth taking a closer look at.
